Mrs Child/Mrs Bell/Ms Darling Groups

Those children working in set 2 sounds  will reach the end of the set on Wednesday 20th January. The videos will start to repeat from Thursday 21st January. If you missed some the first sounds, they this is a good time to catch up. If your child is Fred talking the words, we now need to move onto reading the words with Fred in your head and to eventually read the words quickly. To support this, I have attached a ppt of all the set 2 words which you can use to revise sounds and words. If you need printed copies of the words you can ring the office. Set 3 restarts on Tuesday 26th January for this group.

Mrs Wilcox’s group

Those children working in set 3 sounds will reach the end of the  set on Monday 25th January and it will start to repeat from Tuesday 26th January. You can catch up on some of the sounds you may have missed. Set 3 is always taught twice. The first time is focused on reading and the restart would focus on spelling. This can often cause confusion with different special friends making the same sounds – ay/ai/a-e.

In Y1 this term the focus is reading the set 3 words, initially using:

  • Spot the special friend
  • Fred talk
  • Say the word

Once they know the sound, they should move onto Fred in the head and then speed reading.

I have attached a ppt of set 3 words which you can use to revise the sounds and build up the speed reading of words. If you need printed copies of the words you can ring the office.

Red words – continue with the short films

Hold a sentence – record in English home learning books or on paper if you don’t have it. We expect children to:

  • Say the sentence
  • Start with a capital letter
  • Use finger spaces
  • End with a full stop
  • Use phonics to spell

Text linked activity:

This week out text is ‘A dot in the snow’ by Corrinne Averiss. Listen to the story by following the link below. The following tasks can be recorded in your English home learning book or on the sheets if you don’t have the book.

A dot in the snow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvIliH10wTg

Task 1 Draw your own winter picture scene. (or if your want a winter collage of cold colours). Put a dot somewhere on your picture. Then using the sentence starter ‘My dot is….’ say your sentence and then write your sentence. You could extend your sentence by describing what your dot is doing

eg My dot is a giant penguin. He is waddling to the pond.

Task 2

I want you to imagine that you are in the winter scene. (some of you may have been in the snow last week) How do you feel in the snow. Can you think of 5 words to describe Winter?

Task 3

Using the 5 words form task 2, you will write a sentence to include the word.

eg If you wrote  frosty  your sentence might be:

The trees are frosty.

Remember when you are writing:

  • Say your sentence out loud
  • Start with a capital letter
  • Use finger spaces
  • End with a full stop
  • Use your phonics to spell
