When children are spelling out words at school, they do so by 'sounding out'. This means that they break the words down into sounds, and write each sound to spell the word, e.g. p l ay - play. The sounds are split into sets - Set 1, Set 2 and Set 3, and until the children become confident with all of their sounds in each set and become accurate spellers, they are able to use Sound Cards in class to support their writing and spelling Below you will find a the Sound Cards the children use at school. Each sound in Set 2 and Set 3 comes with a rhyme to help the children to remember them, which is written underneath the sound on the Sound Card. Most children are fairly confident with Set 1 Sounds and only tend to use the Set 2 and Set 3 Sound Cards, but they may still need reminding of some Set 1 sounds, so I have included a copy of all three. Please encourage your child to use these when they are writing. If you don't have a printer at home, please contact the school office who can arrange a printed copy of the Sound Cards for you.
We won’t be sending reading books home, but you can access the Read, Write, Inc books online, and I have included an instruction sheet which tells you how to navigate the website and how to find the eBooks. The sheet also includes the class Oxford Owl login and can be found in the 'Work Instructions' section of our class page. On the Oxford Owl website, you are able to access the Read, Write, Inc books, but please keep to the colour your child is doing in school.

We strongly recommend that you continue to follow the Read, Write, Inc programme at home. There are daily videos on YouTube which cover Speed Sounds, Red Words and Hold a Sentence.
You can find the videos by using the YouTube link at the bottom of this page, which will take you directly to the Read, Write, Inc YouTube channel.
Each group will be completing different lessons and activities. The videos will be available for 24 hours from when they are posted, and they will change daily. Here are the videos I’d like you to look at and the activities I’d like the children to complete.
Parents – if you need help with Phonics, please click on Phonics Help link at the bottom of the page, where you will find guides to Speed Sounds and the terminology used in school. There are videos on here to show you how to pronounce the sounds correctly and there are also worksheets you can download, if you would like your child to do any extra practise.
PhonicsPlay is a great resource to use to help children practise their sounds. For extra practise, you can website for free during lockdown. We have used lots of the games in class, and so the children are familiar with them. Start at Phase 3 and work your way up to Phase 5, practising all of the sounds that are included in each Phase. Even if your child knows the sounds, it won't do them any harm practising and keeping it fresh in their heads .
