At Forest Hall Primary School we teach phonics using a DfE validated phonics scheme: Read Write Inc. (RWI).
Starting in Early Years children learn single sounds and begin to blend CVC words and when confident move onto harder sounds and word reading. The scheme provides structured, daily lessons designed to help children in Reception and Key Stage 1 achieve fluency in reading and writing.
At the end of Year 1 each child will participate in the Phonics Screening Check, they will be asked to read 40 words made up of sounds they have learnt. Some of the words are real words and some are 'alien' words that can be decoded using phonic knowledge. If a child does not acheive a pass mark in Year 1 they can retake the test in Year 2.
